Just like the equipment it sells, Play It Again Sports has a new lease on life.

The store that sells used and new sports and outdoor recreation equipment has moved — across the parking lot in the Turnpike Shopping Center on South Turnpike Road in Santa Barbara.

The new space, near Dave’s Dogs, was previously occupied by a laundry facility and a barber shop. It’s a little smaller than the previous space, but it’s also bright and airy and ready for a second chance serving the community.

“It think it is a better space,” owner Andrew Arnold said. “It has a better visibility in the center.”

After a couple of days of carrying the equipment across the parking lot, the store opened in the new space formally on Thursday. Some equipment still needs to be set up, but the bulk of the equipment is popping off the shelf.

The Turnpike Shopping Center is experiencing a transformation of its own, with renovations to the section facing Hollister Avenue. New stores such as Goleta Optical, Lighthouse Coffee and Dave’s Drip House have opened or will be opening soon.

Arnold said he doesn’t know what’s ahead for the old Play it Again Sports building, but rather than having to move multiple times during the renovation, he worked with the shopping center managers to move across the lot into the new space.

The store sells just about everything an athlete of all ages could want. Bats and balls for softball and baseball, soccer balls, lacrosse sticks, disc golf gear, basketballs, weights, bicycles and other equipment.

In a community without a Dick’s Sporting Goods or Sports Authority, Play It Again Sports is a haven for those searching for new and used equipment. Although there’s a Big 5 Sporting Goods in Santa Barbara, Play it Again offers a lot of the same equipment, in many cases at discount prices.

The store’s first employee, Zach Brasel, said Play It Again was busy working on Thursday morning prepaing for the doors to open and the new space. He said Play It Again is a staple in the community. He remembers when Santa Barbara had a Copeland Sports and an All-American Sporting Goods.

“I just feel that we are doing something right,” Brasel said. “I think the combination of the new and the used, and the ability for people to make a little bit of money, or increase their value by a trade-in, and extend their purchasing experience, I think has been great.”

Play It Again Sports is open from 10 a.m to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. National Cinema Day

Metropolitan Theatres will show movies for $3 as part of the National Cinema Day on Saturday.
